Transmission Fluid 2042
Future Ancestral Technologies
Cannupa Hanska Luger, 2019
Single channel video with audio (02:46)
Performed on Indigenous lands presently under attack by extractive industries*, Transmission Fluid imagines an undetermined future-time where the desecration of sacred lands for capital has long since passed. Time is suspended in a moment of reverence between the past, the present and future generations. A father and son traverse the land, foraging materials from the long abandoned industrial detritus. A cassette recording plays a speech from the artist's grandfather, Carl Whitman, Jr. from 1984.
*Transmission Fluid was filmed on the Fort Berthold Reservation (MHA Nation) in North Dakota where the Bakken Oil Fields are fracked and drilled.
